Kiss had spent the majority of the '80s barely keeping it together, between trying to compete with a shifting – and much younger – rock music landscape as well as the wandering eye of Gene Simmons, who was preoccupied looking toward Hollywood and an acting career. Following some retooling of the lyrics and speeding up the tempo, the band released their interpretation of the song as the ballad “God Gave Rock ‘n’ Roll to You II” on Aug. A few days later, on November 24, 1991, Carr died at the age of 41.Momentum was already in the favor of Kiss when they were approached by Interscope Records to cover Argent's “God Gave Rock and Roll to You” for the soundtrack to the sequel to the surprise 1989 hit film Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. And would never regain consciousness after that. He survived this episode, however, a few days later he suffered severe brain hemorrhage caused by cancer cells that were transported in his bloodstream to the head. The drummer suffered an aneurysm and needed to be hospitalized. However, during Carr’s service, Stanley admitted to “sobbing uncontrollably” and later regretted the way he handled the situation. Stanley wrote in his autobiography that the allegation of mistreating Carr was simply untrue and that he did what he thought was right to support him. The two were not made aware of this until they attended his funeral and were treated with hostility by Carr’s family and friends. Both Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons were labelled as the “bad guys” by Carr for booting him out of the band and not supporting him in his time of need. Carr is interred in Cedar Hill Cemetery in the town of Newburgh, New York.Īlthough it was not publicised at the time, Carr’s death was considered controversial amongst his family and Kiss. Despite his poor health, Carr asked Stanley and Simmons to allow him to be in the video. By mid-1991, the band was preparing to shoot the music video for their upcoming single “God Gave Rock and Roll to You”. Stanley and Simmons refused both have stated they repeatedly told Carr to focus on his cancer treatments and they would allow him to return to Kiss once he regained his health. Soon after Carr’s diagnosis, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons replaced him with session drummer Eric Singer to commence new recordings for the band’s upcoming album Revenge.Īfter recovering from the multiple surgeries, Carr pressed Stanley and Simmons to let him back in the band.

In April 1991, Carr underwent a series of surgeries to remove tumors in his right atrium and lungs in an effort to restore heart function and prevent the cancer’s growth. However, further tests determined that he had heart cancer. Medical tests initially revealed what appeared to be manageable health issues. In February 1991, Carr began feeling ill.
